Honey and Pollen
19 weeks 2 hours ago
The cells with clear liquid are filled with honey. Because it is early Spring, the honey is very light in color. The darker yellow cells are filled with pollen. The bees use the pollen as a protein source when raising their brood. |
Brood Cells in Hive
19 weeks 2 hours ago
The lighter yellow cells are capped as the pupa grows into a fully grown bee. It takes about 11 days for a worker bee to fully develop and emerge from the cell. |
Checking the Hives
19 weeks 2 hours ago
It's been about two and a half weeks since the bees arrived. Chris is checking the hives for signs that the colony is thriving - eggs, larva, and stored honey and pollen. |

Starrlight Hives
21 weeks 1 day ago
Here are the two hives after they've been set up and filled. Eventually, two more sets of frames, called Supers, will be added to the top. This is where the "extra" honey will go and where we'll be able to extract honey from the hive. |
Adding the Deep
21 weeks 1 day ago
A second Deep is added to the top of the hive. The second one holds frames that will contain the honey to feed the hive. |
Putting in the Frames
21 weeks 1 day ago
The frames go into the hive. These will soon be covered with honey comb and then this will be primarily where the queen lays her eggs. |
Pictures of Starrlight Mead's first hives! There are plans for more... eventually! But for now, only 2!
